GENDER BENDER ACTIVITIES

EACH OF US CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. BE AN ADVOCATE! Create and engage in an activity that encourages gender equity. These activities reflect a commitment to fairness and can range from modest gestures to major initiatives. Here are several ideas to start your creative planning:

1.Take a family member, friend, or colleague to a women's athletic event.
2. Design a board or computer game that honors equity advocates.
3. Redesign the logo or mascot of your office or school to be more inclusive.
4. Read a female's biography and share it with a friend.
5. Read non-sexist books to children.
6. Support National Girls and Women in Sports Day (February 9), Myra Sadker Day (March 5) and National Sportsmanship Day (March 7).
7. Create a non-sexist career fair festival.
8. Design a local calendar of famous equity events and leaders.
9. Create a quote of the week bulletin board that presents famous and diverse voices.
10. Monitor a school for equity in athletics. Consider the following when analyzing a program: Does the school district have a written policy on Title IX? What are total athletic expenditures for each gender? Are facilities, equipment, practice time, and game schedules comparable? Is the name and telephone number of the Title IX coordinator made available for athletes, parents, coaches? How? Are the training, experience and professional qualifications and the number of coaches equitable? What are the enrollments or each gender in interscholastic and intramural sports? Are they equitable?
