A Celebration of a Young Woman By: Karla Moran

THE LOS ANGELES MARATHON

The Los Angeles Marathon has been inspired by the success of the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles. The beginning course that started through Downtown, Koreatown, Crenshaw district and many other landmarks has brought many spectators to cheer on those thousands of runners by name as they run their 26.2 mile phenomenon.
LA Marathon 2005
Lets talk about my daughter, Irene Rodriguez, age 16 who started her journey of running at the age of 13 has become a young athlete that stunned the eyes of those who thought strength and endurance was only in the male gender.
Conquering a 26.2 mile Marathon was a struggle for thousands of runners. But it was too a challenge for those that committed themselves and finished at the finish line. Irene coming in and finishing her very first LA Marathon with the following chip time score: 6:00:26 and placing 268, has made the impossible possible!

LA Marathon 2006
Another challenge for this amazing and persistent young woman that conditioned herself to finish her 2nd 26.2 mile run in less than five hours. She has conquered her goal after sprinting the last mile and crossing the finish line with a chip time of 4:48:34 and placing number 65 in her age group.

LA Marathon 2007
Featuring a new course for the 22nd LA Marathon on March 4th 2007 that begun in Universal Studios and ran through Hollywood and Boyle Heights, and then back to the east side of Los Angeles finishing in Downtown on Flower Street made a bit of struggle for many runners. It delayed the finish time for those that trained under a different track.
Irene’s chip time when up to 5:17:54 and placing 99. She was far behind from the legacy runner those that finish within two hours but ahead from those who thought she was not capable of finishing a non-stop 26.2 mile run. As she circuits under the Los Angeles weather in an incredibly exciting race, a competitive and most committed young lady has shocked all those that believe that endurance was only in one gender. Her comeback was so stunning after being underestimated that endurance was only in males.
She has not just run her school’s football field but has accomplished to finish three 26.2 mile marathons, making herself and a winner and proving that gender in an athletic aspect makes no difference. Now with her utmost strength and endurance she conditions herself for the next 26.2 mile journey. Who’s said that endurance in sports is for one gender only? Irene has defeated the impossible as she waves and shows her victory!
